Introduction
The North America Subarctic region coloured in red.
Welcome to my Subarctic Peoples site. Here you can find information on the various and many groups of the Subarctic region of Canada.
The Subarctic cultural area is located in northern Canada, from most of interior Alaska to as far east as Newfoundland, from the tree line beneath the Arctic Circle to as far south as the Plains and Plateau regions of southern Canada. It stretches across a span of seven provinces and two territories. The general climate of the area provides a difficult condition to live in, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.
The people of the Subarctic battle for survival in the extreme weather and environment of the cold northern lands. They rely heavily on hunting for animals, as little agriculture can develop in the harsh conditions and the permafrost-covered ground. Yet, through all of the hardships and difficulties, these groups and bands have maintained a unique culture of their own that is unlike any other.
